Nkuringo sector is among the three renowned sectors of the Bwindi Impenetrable national park that is Nkuringo sector, Ruhija and the Buhoma sector which all offer great trekking experiences to tourists.
The Nkuringo sector- is found in the southern sector of the Bwindi Impenetrable national park and the home to the famous Nkuringo gorilla family group which is believed to be the most interesting group to visit with 19 gorilla family members and yet the most strenuous group to trek while in Uganda. A vist to the Nkuringo sector of the park , rewards visitors with great views of the magnificent scenery, landscapes of Kabale as well as the Nyiragongo and Nyimuragira of Congo which offer very beautiful views when erupting like 2010 when they erupted into the sky, the tourists at this Nkuringo sector at that time experienced wonderful scenic views.
Just like any other mountain gorilla trekking areas, Nkuringo also allows only 8 visitors to its gorilla family group in a day. The Nkuringo gorilla family group is neighboured by the Nshongi gorilla family group near the Rushaga area of the park.
There are three gorilla family groups tracked from the Rushaga area of Bwindi forest that is the Nshongi gorilla family group, Mishaya and Kahungye gorilla family groups.
Nshongi group was first visited in September 2009 and since then it continues to receive 8 visitors per day as they are always 8 trekking gorilla permits available.
Nkuringo is about 45 kilo meters from the sign-posted junction on Kabale to Kisoro road and it’s usually 3 hours from Kabale. When traveling from Kampala, Nkuringo can be reached via the Kabale –Kisoro road using a bus and this lasts between 11- 12 hours at a fee of 90,000 Ugandan shillings. Once at Kisoro, a private vehicle can be hired to the Nkuringo sector of the forest.
It should be noted its is the most remote place of the Bwindi forest.
Sometimes the Nkuringo sector can be reached via the Buhoma via Kihihi or Butogota on the daily bus from Kampala. It is necessary to take a private hire taxi from either Kihihi or Butogota to Buhoma. And in the morning, enjoy a forest nature walk through the park to the Nkuringo sector which may last between 5 and 7 hours. You can return the same way or proceed to Kisoro. National Park and UWA ranger/guide fees must be paid.
Activities in Nkuringo sector
Mountain gorilla trekking
At this sector, travelers visit the only gorilla family group in the area, the Nkuringo gorilla family group , consisting of 19 family members. This sector is the home to the most interesting gorilla family group in Uganda and yet the most strenuous family to trek as it is only to those with great physical conditions and not for the weak.
Forest Nature Walk
This is usually taken in the mornings to and from the Nkuringo and Buhoma sectors of the Bwindi forest via the Ivy and Kashasha rivers bringing you to the Buhoma area by lunch time. This is the n followed by the community nature walk/ visiting to the Batwa Pygmies, discovering more about their way of life and their diverse cultural practices like hunting, fishing within the forest. They also entertain visitors with their traditional music and dance, storytelling etc.
While at this sector, visitors a treated to the best scenic and birding sights; where they will have a ride on Lake Mutanda using the dugout wooden canoe to the other side enjoying the beautiful sights of bird species with in the forest at the same time viewing the scenic views of the Virunga Volcanoes Lying on the Uganda – Rwanda border.
Several other activities can be enjoyed at this sector such as fishing, the beautiful scenery of the Nyiragongo and Nyimuragira among others. A visit to this sector is one memorable encounter, one should never miss when at the Bwindi forest national park.
